ABOUT MEADOW CAMPGROUND IN MOUNT ROBSON PROVINCIAL PARK: Mount Robson Provincial Park is located on Highway 16 East between McBride and the Alberta border. It has two campgrounds which we drove through on August 31, 2022. This paragraph is the review we posted before staying in the Park on a different occasion: Mount Robson River Campground and Mount Robson Meadow Campground were both located near the visitor’s center below Mount Robson. The River Campground was about half the size of the Meadow Campground. River had some electric hook-up campsites that all appeared to be full. The other campsites were not very full. Some sites were near the highway. The Fraser River ran by the campground. Meadow was a large campground that was not full. We drove the outer loop. The sites were well-shaded with great trees, level, and plenty large for us. We liked this campground and would definitely stay here in the outer loop. (The campground was shaped in a large spiral circle – the inner loops probably were not private.) I don’t think there were any hook-ups. This would be a great place to stay if we wanted to check out this beautiful area in more detail. NOTE: A dump station (with water???) was supposed to be located near the visitor’s center but when we were there, that road was closed due to construction.
When Park officials closed Whistler Campground in Jasper Alberta due to a wildfire, we needed a place to stay for 5 nights. Rather than hassle with the crowds of Banff since those campgrounds were almost 100% full, we drove back into British Columbia. We remembered how much we liked the Meadow Campground, very close to Mount Robson.
The Meadow Campground had open campsites for one or two nights, but very few that were still available for 5 nights. We were able to reserve a great campsite, #62, on the inside of the outer loop, away from the highway. Both campgrounds charge $28 per night.
We were lucky because within 24 hours of our arrival, the campground was full with lots of tourists from Jasper. Most of them only stayed one or two nights. The campground appeared to be almost fully reserved on the weekend.
The campground has no hook-ups. There is a dump station that was open during the time we stayed here. It is located near the Visitor’s Center. It has fresh water available, and there are several spigots throughout the campground.
Meadow Campground offers over 100 campsites in a spiral, different than we’ve ever seen. Towards the entrance to the spiral, there is an informational kiosk, the campground hosts campsite, restrooms, and a volleyball court. Near the inside of the spiral there is a playground. Throughout the campground there are restrooms and showers. There are several hiking trails leading from the campground and the Visitor’s Center, Cafe’, Gift Shop, picnic tables, and gas station are close by, just below the scenic and always beautiful Mount Robson. The Cafe’ offers freshly made cold sandwiches, salads, and freshly baked desserts, cookies, pastries, etc. Easily packaged up for hiking or a picnic. They also have coffees, teas, and espressos, plus bottled beverages. And they offer hot breakfasts and lunches. There are quiches, wraps, burgers (including Beyond burgers), daily soups, egg plus meat sandwiches, fries, waffles, etc. The closest town to the Provincial Park is Valemount, about 40 minutes southwest on Highway 5. There you can find a grocery store, post office, hardware store, and restaurants, if needed.
Most campsites within Meadow Campground are large enough and level enough (with a few exceptions) for our RV, Honda tow car, and the tent. Most are somewhat private, particularly in the outside loop – less private as you drive into the spiral towards the center. We loved site #62 and would camp here again. It’s a very nice, quiet area, in general. Most campsites have trees between sites. Campsites offer a picnic table and a fire pit. A truck comes around several times nightly, selling firewood. Sites 1 thru 9 and 70 thru 79 are first-come, first-served; the rest of the sites are reservable. The non-reservable campsites were not as desired because they were closer to the entrance (more traffic) and closer to the highway. When reserving, most sites in the outer loop, except those closer to the highway, are recommended. Generators are allowed from 9 to 11 a.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Check-in time is after 1 p.m. (although earlier appeared to be okay) and check-out time is 11 a.m.
