ABOUT QUATSE RIVER CAMPGROUND: Quatse River Campground is part of Quatse Regional Park. It is owned and operated by the local First Nations tribe. Proceeds from the Campground and Regional Park fund North Island salmon enhancement and habitat rehabilitation projects and the Quatse River Hatchery & Quatse Salmon Stewardship Centre. The campground is located just ten minutes from the BC Ferry from Port Hardy to Prince Rupert on the northwestern coast of British Columbia.
The campground is near Port Hardy, the last town off of Highway 19 on northern Vancouver Island. Northern Vancouver Island is very remote and wild. Almost all roads are gravel logging roads. The area is very popular for fishing and back-country hiking.
Our campground was rustic and heavily tree’d. There were some very large and very old spruce & pine trees. The Quatse River ran alongside ½ of the park and campground. The campground offered a small picnic area, a laundry area, restrooms and showers, an office, and garbage bins. There were 19 tent sites with no hook-ups and 39 RV sites with electric and water hook-ups. There were trees separating all campsites, some were quite shaded, others were not. Our favorite sites were 29, 32, 26, 30, 20, 33, 28, and 27, in that order. We had site #32. We liked it a lot and we’d stay here again. For the first time since arriving on Vancouver Island, the campground was not crowded. We stayed for 3 nights. Check-in was 2 p.m. and check-out was noon. We paid $40 per night (Canadian currency), plus taxes and fees.
