ABOUT OXBOW RECREATION AREA BLM CAMPGROUND: We had been to this campground before in 2018. We loved it and definitely wanted to come back and spend more time. What drew us to this area in the first place was its proximity to Cibola National Wildlife Refuge. The Refuge is only 5 miles from the campground.
Oxbow is a Bureau of Land Management (BLM) campground located near the California/Arizona borders. There are basically three areas for camping; almost all campsites have a water view. There is water access for boating and kayaking. In total there are about 20 to 25 campsites. None are numbered; most have a fire ring and a picnic table. There are trash recepticles. There are no hook-ups and no dump station. You can get water and dump tanks at the “Cibola Store”, a small building in the very small town of Cibola, nearby. The campground has several restrooms for campers.
Camping is first-come, first-served; there are no reservations. Sites are $15 per night or ½ price if you have the Federal Senior Discount Pass. There are campground hosts. We camped in the same campsite we had in 2018, our favorite. There were some trees for shade, the site was large, and this particular area had very little through traffic. The only real noise in this campground is from boats (if there are any), campers and dogs (if there are any), and a nearby bridge that crosses the River is fairly loud when a vehicle goes over it, which isn’t that often. We love it here and will be back to the campground and to the Cibola National Wildlife Refuge.
There are more BLM lands in this area that offer free camping with no hosts, no trash, no restrooms, and very little maintenance – just pull in and park anywhere.
