ABOUT OLIVER LEE MEMORIAL STATE PARK: This was our first visit to this State Park. It is a gem, a hidden little campground that we loved. It is located off Route 54, just 8 miles south of Alamogordo, New Mexico.
There were 44 campsites. Two were for handicapped campers. Out of the other 42 sites, 16 offered 30-amp electric hook-ups. Even though we arrived on a Monday, the sites with electric hook-ups were fully booked. Water spigots are located throughout the park and there is a dump station. Luckily, with the solar panels we could easily camp without the electrical hook-ups.
The views from the campsites on the outer loop (without hook-ups) were outstanding – the mountains behind you, the whole desert, up to a faraway mountain range, on the other three sides. There was no light from close-by big cities at night except for a few twinkling lights in the distance from Alamogordo. The stars at night were brilliant.
We chose site #42; there were no campers near us. We would absolutely stay here again, and we would choose the same campsite. We stayed two nights for $28.
