ABOUT LAKE THUNDERBIRD STATE PARK: This Park is about 30 minutes south east of Oklahoma City. We found it a convenient stopover when traveling to or from Doris Campground and Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge.
Lake Thunderbird State Park is situated around Lake Thunderbird, a very large lake. Ten campgrounds surround part of the lake. Additionally, there are six separate day use areas and four areas set aside for fishing and boating. There is a Park Office and store, a Nature Center, comfort stations, dump stations, boat houses, boat ramps, fishing piers, swim beaches, hiking trails, bicycle trails, playgrounds, marinas, picnic areas and pavilions, equestrian trails, and a dam. Electric hook-ups, water hook-ups, and sewer hook-ups depending on which type of campsite you choose. This is a very busy area for camping and recreation.
We stayed at site #9 at the Hickory Hill #2 campground. Only half of the campgrounds were open early December. Our site was very good with a nice view of the lake and full hook-ups. We stayed two nights at $38 per night. Within a day our loop nearly filled up and it became crowded and noisy. That’s why we would stay here again, but just as a stopover and not for an extended period of time. We did not drive through the campgrounds that were open and only became familiar with our loop.
