ABOUT LA MANCHE PROVINCIAL PARK: This was a nice campground situated on the large & beautiful La Manche Pond, conveniently located near towns that offer boat tours for whale watching, icebergs, and puffins. We recommend O’Brien’s Boat Tours out of Bay Bulls. The campground is located not too far north to St. John’s, but not so close as to be affected by the city crowds. To the south you can easily reach Ferryland (Colony of Avalon) and many, small coastal towns; farther south on Route 10 you can drive to Portugal Cove South, where you turn off on the very scenic road to Cape Race and the lighthouse.
Park amenities include hiking trails, fishing, a swimming area, canoeing or kayaking on the pond, birdwatching, a beach, comfort station (restrooms and showers), drinking water (boil order in effect), a dump station, electric hook-ups at 27 campsites, pit toilets, picnic area, laundry room, playground & play area, firepit/BBQ, and internet/wi-fi is quite iffy – if available at all.
There’s a total of 82 campsites. There are three campsite loops. Two loops have unserviced sites. One offers 21 electrical hook-up sites. In addition, there are 6 sites with electric hook-ups in a row on the pond, but these campsites are in the open and by the picnic area, boat launch, and campground road. The loop that has campsites #1-25 has larger, more private sites surrounded by trees and most of those sites are good, with either pond views or access right to the water. We had site #7 both times we were here and it is an excellent campsite (no hook-ups). We would stay here, at this campsite, again.
La Manche Provincial Park is open from mid-May to mid-September (from 5/17 to 9/17 in 2023). We paid $87.60 (Canadian currency) for 4 nights. Check-in time is after 3 p.m. although they will let you in earlier if your campsite is available. Check-out time is before 2 p.m. We would come here again. In 2023, we had a Snowshoe Hare, a Red Fox, Loons, and Frogs that twanged near our campsite.
