ABOUT JACK’S POND PARK: This was our first visit to this campground. Many times we’ve driven by huge campgrounds right beside busy highways and said, no thanks, too busy for us. And here we are. This Park was conveniently located between the lower west side of the Cape Shore (Cape St. Mary’s Ecological Reserve) and the lower west side of the Burin Peninsula. Not wanting to drive all day, we made reservations for a one-night stopover, sight unseen. Right off the Trans Canada Highway 1 on the south side of the highway, it looked fine until we got to the intersection leading to the camp store where you check in. Then we said, OMG – look at how crowded they are.
Campsites were close to each other in many cases unless you had a seasonal site. There was a large lake and beaches full of people, most of them children. It was difficult to get anywhere due to all the people and vehicles of all kinds in the road. Checking in took a long time due to the throngs of people coming into the store for everything offered: store, ice cream, food, checking in and out, etc.
There are 385 campsites. Open May 12 to September 30 in 2023. We were assigned site #A20. When we called to make a reservation, there were only a couple of campsites left. We were lucky to have gotten one at all. The site included 15-20 AMP electrical hook-up and water hook-up (water must be boiled before drinking). There was a dump station. There is a cell phone connection. $35 cash (Canadian currency) for one night. People were crammed in like sardines. They were celebrating “Halloween in July”. The sheer number of children running around was amazing. Dogs barking. Continual traffic driving by. ATV’s. Etc. We are just NOT used to this. Would we stay here again if forced to due to circumstances and only for one night? Yes. It was a Saturday night in late July. This is summer after all.
