ABOUT CITY OF ROCKS STATE PARK: Well, we hit the jackpot again! This was a great campground, far away from anything but massive rocks. The campsites are intermingled among these rocks, some as tall as forty feet. Getting into some of these campsites can be quite difficult, and the map on the campground site does not accurately show what each site looks like, nor its exact location. If you are tenting of have a smaller rig that does not require leveling, this might not be an issue. But for us, having a reservation and taking a chance on our site being accessible was not a good idea. Luckily, we did NOT have a reservation and could drive through (4 times along with many other vehicles scoping out sites). We finally had to disconnect the Honda from the RV and drive the Honda around the campground so that we could get into various campsites and check them out. This is a list of the campsites we felt would work best for us: requiring reservations (which can be made online after arrival to the campground and not necessarily in advance) – #32, #35, #38, #39, #30A, and first come, first served (no reservations required) – #45, #40.
This was our first visit to this State Park. It’s not that big, with 45 campsites, and we were surprised to find THERE WAS NO DUMP STATION. There was potable water. Campsites 1 through 10 had water & electric hook-ups, but they were set up parking-lot style and not in with the rocks.
We stayed in site #32 and loved it. Although it was a little difficult to get level, the site was private, off the campground road, surrounded on three sides by incredible rocks, and had a wonderful, large holly trees for shade on two sides. We put up the screened tent and it was very quiet and relaxing. We stayed for three nights at $14 per night (includes reservation fees).
City of Rocks State Park offers campsites, hiking trails, mountain biking, wildlife viewing, birding, stargazing, picnic areas, restrooms, a group camping area, and a desert botanical garden. The uniquely designed, new Visitor Center includes a large display area and modern restrooms with hot showers. We would definitely stay here again!
