ABOUT CHUPADERO MOUNTAIN VIEW RV PARK: This was our second visit to this campground. Normally we stay away from private parks; this campground will always be an exception.
Below is a copy of the review I wrote in 2018 after our first visit:
Chupadero Mountain View RV Park, 1523 Highway 1, P.O. A short distance from the entrance to Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge on Highway 1. We’d originally planned to stay at the Birdwatcher’s Campground just down the road, but when we arrived we found they’d put the place up for sale. The owner’s uncle was in the process of setting up a Park to service the steady flow of visitor’s to the wildlife refuge. He has big plans for expansion; he & his wife own 10 acres of farmland which they plant with various rotating crops each year. They’d put in new gravel and around ten campsites with full hook-ups on a raised gravel bed at the end of a long driveway. It was the perfect place to stay for us. When we arrived, it had been raining hard for the first rain in four months. We weren’t the only ones seeking shelter from the storm & by the evening we arrived, the campground was almost full. Jose, the owner, was very nice and quite accommodating; a real talker. We had site #7, $25 per night. We would definitely come back and stay here again.
That is how we came to stay here the first visit. This trip we didn’t hesitate to come back again. They still have 10 campsites, most of which offer full hook-ups. We stayed one week and Jose Padilla, the owner, the same “real talker” from the other review and still a super nice person, charged us $150 for the seven nights, giving us the final night free. We had site #6. The front row, the three sites that directly face the road (which is where we stayed both visits), is the best area because you face the farm fields where the resident Sandhill Cranes hang out. You have a panoramic view. They still do not have a website. The way to reach them is by phone (see below for contact information). Always call in advance because they were full, to almost full, every night we were here. They no longer live in the little house here at the farm, so they run over every time someone new comes in, in other words, call first. We will definitely come back as it’s only a 10 minute drive to Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge. The closest sort-of-big town is Socorro. North of Socorro is LADD, another wonderful place to birdwatch. The campground is not fancy. It has no playground, no swimming pool, no fire pit & picnic table at each site, but it was perfect for us. The campground sits way back from the road. The only noise is the occasional train coming by in the distance or the rumble of Sandhill Cranes when their breakfast arrives. We will stay here every time we are in the area! P.S. Socorro is full of Mexican restaurants. We tried one and it was very good – El Camino. Sofia’s is also supposed to be good but they close at 4 pm. San Antonio supposedly has a good Mexican restaurant – the Crane. We haven’t tried it yet. Propane is available at Conoco in Socorro. The cheapest gas around was at a Marathon Gas Station in a small town north of Socorro on the way to LADD.
