ABOUT BUTTER POT PROVINCIAL PARK: This is a large campground with 175 campsites within within 5 loops. It is conveniently located near St. John’s and the Avalon Peninsula, right off the Trans Canada Highway 1. And you cannot hear the traffic from the road. It’s open mid-May to mid-September. There are no hook-ups here, but generator usage is permitted from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. There is a dump station and water is available at the 2 comfort stations (it is not drinkable at this time – it must be boiled before consuming).
Other amenities include hiking trails that go out into the surrounding mountains, and there are two large ponds for swimming and boating, 2 beaches, laundry, playgrounds, fire pits, picnic tables, first-aid stations, and scenic lookouts. There are regular & recyclable trash receptacles at each campsite.
Most of the campsites in the lower four loops of the campground (sites 1 thru 150), are close to each other and some of them are large, but some of them are small for tent campers. Facilities (dump station, a comfort station, numerous restrooms, playgrounds) are located close to these campsites. The final loop with Sites 151 thru 175 is deeper in the woods and at the very end of the campground. We had site #155 both times we were here. These sites are larger and much more private than the other campsites, and the campsites in this loop are long – you can pull way in, allowing for more privacy. We loved our site and could pull in with the front of the RV facing the woods. This is a good campground and we definitely would stay here again. In 2019 during the summer, they were booked up completely particularly on the weekends; in 2023 our loop was only busy on the weekends. There was a cell/internet signal from our campsite, but not from much of the campground. The only drawback was the road leading to the campground once you get off the TCH-1, and the campground main road leading to the loops, were rough with bumps and potholes.
In 2023, we paid $127.90 (Canadian currency) for 6 nights. Check in time is after 3 p.m., but they let us come in earlier since no one was occupying our reserved campsite. Check out time is before 2 p.m. NOTE: O’Brien’s Boat Tours (icebergs, whales, sea birds) is only 30 minutes from the campground at Bay Bulls.
