ABOUT BRIMSTONE HEAD RV PARK: This was our second visit to Fogo Island so we knew what to expect at the campground. For example, they do not take reservations. BUT if you’ve been there before and you call in advance to request a specific campsite, they will hold it for you by putting lobster traps on the site so no one can park there. Site #11 is the only campsite (except for a tent site) that is right on the water. If you drive in frontwards rather than backing in, you face the rocky cliff and you are not facing the other campsites. It is very nice. This trip we stayed six nights. In June it was foggy and cold with lots of rain. In 2019 we stayed for four nights in late July; it was still a little foggy at times but not rainy and much warmer. But it was also the summer busy season and the campground was full at all times. This trip the campground was never full. The Northern Gannets dove straight-down into the water right in front of us. Minke Whales visited the cove. And there was an iceberg in the cove. Although it was very cold, foggy most of the time, rainy a couple of days, and sometimes fairly windy, it was a great visit. Even though it was mid June, none of the museums were open yet. But we did discover a fantastic restaurant: Bang Belly Bistro.
The campground is located about ½ hour from the ferry terminal. The ferry which travels from Fogo Island to Farewell, near Twillingate, and vice versa, will also drop people off at the Change Islands. Leave enough time for your stay to see all of Fogo Island in good weather, and for a trip to Change Islands. Fresh fish is available, sometimes, at the villages of Joe Batt’s Arm or Seldom at the Fish Co-op/Processing Plants, Monday – Friday. Propane refills are available Monday – Thursday at Vanessa’s Convenience Store in Seldom. Gasoline is available at Vanessa’s or in the town of Fogo or on the way to Tilting at Tina’s Gas Bar. There is a Foodland Grocery Store in Shoal Bay.
Brimstone Head Park is run by the Lion’s Club and the town of Fogo. It offers tent sites in an open field – no hook-ups. There is overflow camping behind the Lion’s Club Building without hook-ups. Otherwise, the campsites overlooking the cove all offer 30 AMP electric hook-ups along with water hook-ups. There is a popular, widely-publicized hiking trail that leads to the top of Brimstone Head. There can be a lot of people hiking around the Park in season. The campground offers showers and restrooms; there are no set check in and check out times due to the island being “on ferry time”. The campground gets busy every time a ferry arrives and can empty when people leave to catch the ferry back to the mainland. (Once all the campsites are taken, there is nowhere else to camp on the Island.) There is no dump station at the campground but there is a dump station in Seldom at the intersection of the road leading to the Seldom Fish Co-op.
