GOOD LUCK DIANE & TED! WE HOPE YOU GET TO MAINE SOON!

Day 5 – This was our fifth day without problems. We were feeling a bit cocky. That changed, but it all worked out in the end. (Happy face.)  We departed Bucksport/Fort Knox KOA at 9:25 a.m. It was 45 degrees & sunny, a beautiful day. We got up at 7 a.m. rarin’ to go, wanting to get to our land to see how it fared through the winter. It was 38 degrees then.

105 miles, (3:15), 38347-38452

We stopped at one of our favorite places, Martha’s Diner, for their incredible Crab Quiche. We try to do this every time we go to our land. The road, Route 1, was really bad in areas which had not yet been worked on, worse than we’d ever seen it. Bad enough that we were worried at times about the huge bumps and dips and their impact on the RV and tow car. Things we’d carefully packed up fell onto the floor. The girls were yelling at us; nothing we could do about it. At one point where they were working on the road, we traveled quite a way on dirt.

When we arrived at our land, we pulled into the driveway and drove down to the RV pad. It’s always a bit of stress, wondering if trees had come down during the winter, cutting off access in  the driveway. It was clear, but there were several large branches down blocking the entry. Rob cleared them up and we proceeded into the pad and parked the RV. Everything looked great, almost as if we’d never left. We’d lost no big trees and the trails he’d worked so hard on last year held up well. I unpacked the inside of the RV and Rob headed out to hook up all of our utilities. It was 12:40 p.m., 52 degrees, and partly sunny.

When Rob hooked up the electric, it came on then flickered off.  It continued to alternate between off and on, unable to hold the connection. This could be bad. If something in the RV had become loose or disconnected during our extremely bumpy ride on Route 1, it would be very difficult for him to determine where the loose wire was. Meanwhile, he hooked up our water and that worked, which meant that the well pump was getting electricity and the RV was receiving it. The plot thickens…..

Why were we getting electricity from some areas and not others? He called the local electric company. They said they’d send someone out. We were hoping it was their problem, not ours.

Later in the afternoon, Emera Maine arrived and found that the top of a tree had grown up into the electrical wire and had been rubbing against the wire, cutting into the wire and causing an interruption in service. They cut the top off the tree, spliced the wires, and VOILA, we had electricity. This was much easier for us than it could have been. And with the possibility of temperatures in the low 30’s tonight, we’d have electricity.  Potential big problem solved.

Rob saw a Loon in the Harbor this afternoon, and this evening we heard them calling to each other. What an awesome sound!  Maybe they’re nesting. It’s earlier in the year than when we’re normally here.

We celebrated our arrival, the Loons, and the Electric Company with wine and beer & relaxed at this peaceful, beautiful place. The girls seemed to recognize where they were and settled in nicely. We looked at our books on Atlantic Canada and our Canadian maps, anticipating our upcoming trip.  All is well.
