Gros Morne/Norris Point KOA, Norris Point, NL

ABOUT GROS MORNE/NORRIS POINT KOA, NORRIS POINT, NL: This KOA campground is very good and is conveniently located between Rocky Harbour and the villages of Norris Point & Neddy Harbour. It was a National Park campground before KOA took it over. The campsites in the original Park-section have plenty of trees around them offering privacy. Some are right on the water with good Pond views. The newer campsites are lined up in a row like most other KOAs and host many of the big rigs. Prices varied depending on the amenities you chose. Some sites offer full hook-ups including sewer, many offer electric & water hook-ups, some just water hook-ups, and there are some campsites without any services.

There were 103 campsites – 44 were full hook-ups in an open area (6 with patios), 10 were cabins, and the other sites were in the woods & private. There were also 4 glamping domes. Seven of the campsites are on the water, as are the glamping domes and 8 of the cabins. There is a dump station. The laundry room had 4 washers & 4 dryers, all clean. Customer service was excellent. There was a good internet/wi-fi signal. Other amenities included swimming, kayaking/canoeing, showers, restrooms, a playground with a jumping pillow, a kitchen shelter, firepits/picnic tables at each site, a game room, office, store, and a pet playground. In 2023, we paid $40 per night including taxes & fees (Canadian currency) and including the 10% KOA member discount. We would come back again.

We stayed at the Gros Morne/Norris Point KOA campground for 4 nights in 2019. We had Site #3. In 2023, we stayed for 13 nights total, beginning with Site #8 for 11 nights and then Site #35 for 2 nights. Their season was May 15 to October 15 in 2023. Check-in time was after 1 p.m. and check-out time was before 11 a.m. There are plenty of other campgrounds in Gros Morne National Park, but we returned again to this one because of its central location and convenience to the other Park activities, because like most other KOA campgrounds it is well-maintained and clean, and because so many of the campsites here offer privacy. Our favorite sites are: 1) #8 and 2) #7. Both of these campsites are easy to get into parking with the windshield forward to take advantage of the water view. (The water-view campsites also have room for the screened tent and offer Adirondack Chairs overlooking the Pond.) Sites #3 and #5 are similar, but you do have to drive a longer distance the wrong way on the one-way campground road to be able to park front ways. This wouldn’t be an issue when the campground is not busy, i.e., off season & not on a weekend. Sites #3 thru #8 have water and electric hook-ups. In addition, Sites #47 and #48 are good campsites with water views but we’d need to back in and couldn’t go the wrong way on the road; they do not have electric hook-ups, but in a pinch, they are good campsites. (You can hear the Loons calling from the Pond from any of these campsites.)

NOTE: There are excellent restaurants near the campground. Serving dinner only, Chanterelles and The Black Spruce Restaurant are wonderful (the views from Black Spruce are fantastic). For lunch, we loved The Old Store Cafe. You can get RV propane at the Irving Gas Station on West Link Road near the entrance to Rocky Harbour.

ALSO OF NOTE: We discovered a small private campground in Norris Point on the top of a hill with incredible Bonne Bay views. It would be nice to stay there for part of our next visit, especially weekends when the KOA can be crowded and loud with kids running around & dogs barking. Shoal Point (Panoramic) RV Park: We looked at this campground on September 6, 2023. There were only 5 campsites, and all appeared to have full hook-ups. We were driving to make reservations at The Black Spruce Restaurant and saw a small sign by the road for the campground. We have no other information other than a phone number – (709) 639-3520.
