ABOUT BARACHOIS POND PROVINCIAL PARK: The largest provincial park in western Newfoundland has 3,500 hectares (a hectare is 2.5 times the size of an acre) of balsam fir forest, freshwater swimming beaches, birdwatching, mountain streams, and hiking trails with panoramic views. Large lake for swimming, boating, angling, and kayaking.
There are 150 campsites within 5 campground loops. Season – mid May to mid September. Amenities: beach, comfort station, drinking water, dump station, firepit/BBQ, internet/wi-fi at the office, laundry, playground/play areas, unserviced sites. Check in time is 3 p.m. Check-out time is 2 p.m. We arrived at 11 a.m. due to high winds where we were camping previously; because no one was camping in our reserved site, the ranger let us check-in early.
We had site #150, no hook ups, buried in the trees, quite private. The last campsite on the road. We could head in. Three nights $67.45 (Canadian currency). There was a dump station and water was available in the campground. The drinking water was supposed to be boiled before using. We would stay here again in the same campsite. Or if this site was already taken, the two campsites right next to it on the same side of the campground road would also work because we could still head in.
Many campsites are located by the large lake. They are not private. Many are small and close to their neighbor. Some are right on the water and you could launch a kayak from the site; others are right next to areas set aside for swimming. We could not head in frontwards to any of the water sites. Because of the locations to the water, these sites are the first ones to be reserved. P.S. The campground road and the road leading from Trans Canada Highway 1 to the check-in station were in disrepair and in need of work.
Barachois Pond Provincial Park: Located off Trans Canada Highway 1 between Route 480 and Route 490. Phone numbers are (709) 649-0048 [in season] and (709) 637-2040 [off season]. E-mail is info@parksnl.ca. Website is www.parksnl.ca.
