Chestnut Ridge Regional Park, Bruceton Mills, WV

ABOUT CHESTNUT RIDGE REGIONAL PARK, BRUCETON MILLS, WV: We had never been to this campground before, but we had been to this area about a year ago. Chestnut Ridge Regional Park was located within the West Virginia University Research Forest and across from Cooper’s Rock State Forest. It is a very scenic and picturesque area.

The campground offers 3 large modern cabins, 4 smaller rustic cabins, 39 tent camping sites, and 21 RV/trailer camping sites. The RV/trailer campsites offer 30 AMP electric and drinking water. There are Day Use facilities including a dining hall and 3 pavilions, all rented for a fee. There is a dump station. Campsites have picnic tables and fire pits. Amenities also include fire wood (for a fee), 2 lakes for fishing (1 for swimming, too), potable water, trash dumpsters, a sledding hill for winter sports, a warming hut, an office and store, trash bins, walking trails, restrooms and outhouses, 2 playgrounds, a shower house, and parking.

We had site #43 in Area D, a smallish campsite that was not level (but we could make it work). In Area D (don’t know about the other areas), there were muddy trenches running throughout the Area, probably indicative of past flooding issues. There were 5 campsites out of 14 in Area D that were occupied on a Saturday. From what we saw of the other camping areas, they were more crowded. The fee was $30 plus reservation fees and taxes per night. Check-in time was 2 p.m. Check-out time was noon. We would stay here again for a one or two-night stopover.
