ABOUT CUSTER/MT. RUSHMORE KOA HOLIDAY CAMPGROUND: We stayed at this KOA Campground for 3 nights. We’d wanted to stay in Custer State Park, but due to the annual Bison Round-up, all sites were taken for the weekend. The KOA campground worked out just fine. It was located just outside the town of Custer and 30 minutes from Blue Bell Campground, a Custer State Park Campground that we’ll be moving to after the weekend.
The campground was almost completely full over the weekend, but Sunday it almost emptied out. We were assigned a deluxe patio, pull-through campsite with full hook-ups. There weren’t a lot of choices left when we made our reservations. Therefore, it was expensive: $314.70. But, hey, we had a BBQ Grill on our deluxe patio, which we didn’t use.
KOA’s work out well for us for overnight stays – they usually have space and are able to accommodate us, they have good customer service, they are safe, and they are very well kept up. We had site #201, up on a rise overlooking the scenery below us, there was a laundry room, check in was 1 p.m. and check out was 11 a.m. There were restrooms, showers, a dump station, a playground, a jumping pillow, a large dog walk area, and a swimming pool. They had a total of 80 campsites including tent sites and cabins. We would stay here again under the same circumstances.
