Burro Creek Recreation Area BLM Campground, Wikieup, AZ

ABOUT BURRO CREEK RECREATION AREA BLM CAMPGROUND: We had been to this campground before in 2018. We loved it and definitely wanted to come back and spend more time. The campground hadn’t changed except for one important thing: effective January 27, 2022, campsites 7, 9, and 10 thru 17 are all reservable now; everything else is still first-come/first-served. As far as we’re concerned this was a big disadvantage to us because when we got here and drove through to see what was available, about half the campsites were pre-booked for various upcoming days, leaving us with only two sites to choose from. As it turned out, one of two sites was perfect for us (site #1). Since there is no internet and phone connections, to determine the availability of reservable campsites would have meant driving a distance to obtain a signal.

This campground is managed by the Bureau of Land Management. There are no hook-ups but there is a dump station and water is available there. Each site comes with a fire pit and covered picnic table. The campsites are spread out a good distance from each other in a beautiful canyon. A really quiet, gorgeous location. There is a creek running through the canyon which was narrow when we were there the first time, but had more water in it this time. There was definitely the potential for the creek to run freely during the rain downpours. The best campsites are site #7, a pull-through, large campsite with no one near it (but it is popular because of the view and it is reservable), and site #1 which is non-reservable and very private if you drive in head first, and it had plenty of room for the screened tent. The campground is well maintained. $14 per night, $7 per night with senior discount. Really cheap for this lovely place. There is no doubt we will come here again.

NOTE: There is BLM camping near the entrance to the Burro Creek campground near the main highway in case we can’t get a site the day we get there but would just spend a night at the primitive campsite, then get one at the campground the next day. There is also a camping area BLM primitive off Hwy 93, 8.5 mi north of Burro Creek campground on Signal Rd west 1.1 mi.
