Wolfe’s Neck Oceanfront Camping, Freeport, ME

ABOUT WOLFE’S NECK OCEANFRONT CAMPING: Formerly known as Wolfe’s Neck Farm Campground and Recompense Shores, Wolfe’s Neck Oceanfront Camping is a place we love to stay and do so almost every time we go to our land in Maine. It is a wonderful campground a short drive from downtown Freeport. Part of Wolfe’s Neck Organic Farm and near Wolfe’s Neck State Park, it is on beautiful Casco Bay.

This is a busy farm which has groups of people coming in for tours. In places it is kid-oriented, but other areas are quiet. There’s hiking, biking, & kayaking and the close proximity to Freeport. There is a camp store that also sells vegetables and meats grown on the Farm. There’s also a Cafe’ that has breakfast (eggs from the farm) and other items for lunch or an early dinner. We haven’t eaten there yet, but they do have Lobster Rolls. There are farm programs, lectures, and tours. Also, at the right time, you can find classes on organic gardening.

We have stayed here many times. The best sites have been #106, and #104 (in the woods near where the cows come home, with water views in the distance and with water & electric hook-ups), #111 (in the woods, a pull-through & large site, with water & electric hook-ups), #122 & #124 (with water & field views a little ways off the campground road, but no hook-ups), and we’ve stayed at #812 (a private site on the water, but they’ve changed the site numbers since then – we think it’s 219 now, no hook-ups) or the site next to 812 (which is less private but good views and no hook-ups – could be site 221 now). MOST of the campsites have no hook-ups and are smallish, for tents mostly. Some of these campsites have excellent water views.

There is water and a dump station nearby. Off season the campground is very quiet and reservations are not required. In prime season it is hard to get a site, with or without hook-ups. Reservations in advance are a great idea then. Prices range depending on the site, anywhere from $50 to $70 per night for RV sites with hook-ups. Check-in time was 1 p.m. and check-out time was 11 a.m. 134 Burnett Road, Freeport, ME 04032, (207) 865-9307, www.freeportcamping.com, info@freeportcamping.com.

April 20, 2023 – NOTE: Wolfe’s Neck Oceanfront Camping doesn’t open for the season until early May. They leave some of the campsites open year-round, however, and those are available first-come, first-served when there is no snow on the ground. The rate is reduced and those sites that are open that normally offer hook-ups, only offer electricity. Sites that are open that normally do not have hook-ups, still do not have hook-ups. There is no one manning the camp store and registration office, but registration forms are available outside the door. After picking a campsite, the form and payment can be left thru a slot in the office door. We had site #410 with electricity and it was just fine. There were very few people camping, mostly just workers for the camp. But, IMPORTANT, after we settled in we saw site #414. It is an amazing campsite. There may be water available at this site IF water is available. We saw no electricity hook-up, but the campsite is way off the campground road and offers a beautiful water view. Very private!
