Day 59 – A note regarding yesterday’s post: we forgot to mention one other cause of part of the flooding during Hurricane Katrina – there was a large pumping station in place at the 17th Street canal, designed to pump water OUT in case of a flood. This plan failed causing this important levee to break. Why did it fail? Because the personnel trained to operate this pump had evacuated and no one was there to operate the pump. Okay, that said, we move on to other topics.
We departed our canal RV site at 9 a.m. and it was already 79 degrees and humid. We drove from Pontchartrain north into Mississippi for awhile, then crossed the Mississippi River heading west back into Louisiana, arriving at our campground, Lakeview Paradise near Jonesville, Louisiana, close to 2 p.m. Had lunch, unpacked, and set up. This is a new campground right on Cocodrie Lake which is speculated to be part of the former course of the Mississippi River. It is a large, horseshoe-shaped Lake and it’s beautiful. We had Site #13 on the Lake; the campground was almost empty – it was a weekday. The campground was full hook-ups and inexpensive, just $20 per night on a weekday, $40 on weekends.
We needed some down time after the busy time at New Orleans, so we saved the driving around to check out the area for the next day. We sat outside looking at the bird activity on the Lake with our wine and beer, very relaxing. The high today was 83 degrees, sunny and humid. The cats like it here, also. AND it’s the end of Month #2.
